Bulletin of Magnetic Resonance NMR STUDIES OF MEMBRANE SURFACES
Biological membranes are usually composed of a limited number of phospholipid types, often mixed with other, non-phosphate containing lipids and proteins. Magnetic resonance methods have proved particularly useful in the study of the acyl chain behaviour of* phospholipids in membranes, in particular in the study of how lipids and proteins interact at the molecular level as reviewed by Marsh and...
متن کاملApplication of 31P NMR to model and biological membrane systems.
Proton, deuterium and carbon magnetic resonance techniques have been widely used to study the hydrocarbon chain region of model bilayer systems and biological membranes (for a review see :[l]). More recently, phosphorus magnetic resonance (31P NMR) has been introduced to study the polar headgroup region of membranes [2-7]. In this communication we show how 31P NMR can define an order parameter ...
متن کاملSmall-angle scattering and its interplay with crystallography, contrast variation in SAXS and SANS.
Methods of contrast variation are tools that are essential in macromolecular structure research. Anomalous dispersion of X-ray diffraction is widely used in protein crystallography. Recent attempts to extend this method to native resonant labels like sulfur and phosphorus are promising. Substitution of hydrogen isotopes is central to biological applications of neutron scattering. Proton spin po...
متن کاملPhysical studies on phosphonium phosphatidylcholine. A unique [31P]phosphorus nuclear-magnetic-resonance probe for model and biological membranes.
1. Distearoyl phosphatidylcholine and the phosphonium analogue, in which the nitrogen atom is replaced by phosphorus, show similar gel-liquid crystalline transition temperatures as detected by differential scanning calorimetry. 2. The temperature-dependence of the 31P n.m.r. (nuclear-magnetic-resonance) linewidths of the phosphate resonances of sonicated vesicles of distearoyl phosphatidylcholi...
متن کاملThe structure of phosphate glass biomaterials from neutron diffraction and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance data.
Neutron diffraction and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to probe the structure of phosphate glass biomaterials of general composition (CaO)0.5-x(Na2O)x(P2O5)0.5 (x = 0, 0.1 and 0.5). The results suggest that all three glasses have structures based on chains of Q2 phosphate groups. Clear structural differences are observed between the glasses containing Na2O and CaO. The P-...
